Pickleball will become the fastest growing sport in 2023 due to its convenience and unique experience. For pickleball lovers, there is nothing better than having your own pickleball court and playing with your family anytime. A well-designed and professional pickleball court is essential to an enjoyable playing experience. Check out our guide to the complete pickleball court construction process to ensure your court has the highest playability and durability.

Pickleball Court Size

A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. The court is divided into two equal halves by a net. Following this rule will ensure game fairness and enjoy the same experience as the match playing field. Of course, you can also add more cushioning areas around the pickleball court depending on the venue.

choose the right location

The first step in pickleball court construction is choosing the perfect location for your court. You need a flat area free of obstructions to lay the court surface on. In order to ensure a better experience in the future, we recommend that you look for an area that does not have high winds, which will affect the trajectory of the pickleball.

prepare the ground

If you prepare the ground adequately, you will have a stable and durable pickleball court. The better your court ground is prepared, the less time you will spend maintaining it in the future. Follow these steps to get a durable ground:

  1. Clearing the area: Your chosen area will first need to be cleared of any vegetation, including any grass, weeds, or shrubs that are present. Also, some existing rocks or debris will also need to be removed. We recommend a tool such as a shovel or a sod cutter for the job. It is very important to create a clean and flat surface for the court.
  2. Measure and mark court dimensions: Use a tape measure to mark the dimensions of your chosen pickleball court on the ground. You can use string or chalk lines to outline the sides of the court as markers.
  3. Dig the ground: Use a mechanical excavator or use a shovel to dig into the ground in the marked area to a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches. The soil is then removed.
  4. Compact the soil: Use a compactor or roller to compact the soil to prevent the ground from settling over time.
  5. Rainwater Drainage: It is especially important to build a drainage system or install drainage pipes around the court. Because in the process of raining, if there is no drainage system, the accumulation of rainwater will be formed. This will seriously affect the rebound of the ball and cause damage to the court surface.
  6. Building a concrete base: While some pickleball court materials can be installed directly on dirt, this is not professional. The soil becomes soft when it rains, which can cause damage to your pickleball court. A professional pickleball court lays the court surface on a concrete base. If you have experience in this direction or have a strong DIY ability, you can do it yourself. Or you can contact a local concrete construction company to help you get it done.

Build the Base

While some pickleball court materials can be installed directly on dirt, this is not professional. The soil becomes soft when it rains, which can cause damage to your pickleball court. A professional pickleball court lays the court surface on a concrete or asphalt base. Bitumen is cost-effective and has the ability to withstand freeze-thaw cycles. Concrete, on the other hand, offers superior durability and a smoother playing surface. If you have experience in this direction or have a strong DIY ability, you can do it yourself. Or you can contact a local concrete construction company to help you get it done.

Select the Surface

The surface material of the pickleball court greatly affects the speed of the game and the comfort of the players. There are several materials available in the market for pickleball court construction: acrylic and modular sports flooring. Acrylic surfaces are inexpensive to build and provide excellent ball response. The modular sports flooring is made of PP material. Its cushioned surface enhances shock absorption and reduces fatigue on the athlete’s joints.

Pickleball Game Lines

Know the pickleball marking lines to get them right on your court. The bottom line marks the back boundary of the field, while the sidelines mark the left and right boundaries of the field. The no-volley zone, also known as the galley, is the 7-foot area on either side of the net where players are not allowed to volley the ball. The halfway line divides the pitch into two equal halves.

Accessories

Choose your favorite pickleball accessories to complete the construction of the pickleball court. A pickleball net is necessary. You can choose fixed or portable net. Generally, stationary pickleball nets are more durable and professional. Additionally, you can install the court fencing and lighting system to enhance the overall functionality and aesthetics of the pickleball court.

Precautions

  • In areas prone to heavy rainfall, ensure the drainage of the pickleball court to avoid accumulation of rainwater.
  • When choosing the surface of the court, do some testing, and the surface of the bowling court should be non-slip enough to minimize the risk of injury.
  • Regular maintenance: such as cleaning the surface and checking for cracks, will help extend the life of the court.
